The BEST way to help your kids with divorce
HOW TO PUT YOUR OXYGEN MASK ON FIRST
You’ve heard it a thousand times…during and in-flight emergency, you must put YOUR oxygen mask first…before you help your kids or anyone else.
In a divorce (emergency)…it’s just as critical to take care of YOURSELF so you can manage tasks, a home, a job, pets, responsibilities, the “divorce project”…and still support your children. If you run out of oxygen...you won't be able to do anything or help anyone, including yourself.
Your kids are watching you and the ways you deal with your divorce, and they will model their own behavior and reactions on yours. This can be a really daunting thought, but it can also give you the permission you may need to put on your oxygen mask first.
Here are few ways to nourish mind, body, and spirit…alone or together with your kids or loved ones.
OXYGEN FOR THE MIND
· Take a walk
· Take a long bath
· Listen to calming music
· Meditate
OXYGEN FOR THE BODY
· Drink a glass of water and stay hydrated
· Get enough sleep
· Eat a healthy diet
· Create a regular fitness routine that works for you
OXYGEN FOR THE SOUL
· Keep a journal
· Read books that help you spiritually (Click here - Booklist: Heal Your Broken Heart)
· Join a spiritual support group
· Develop a spiritual practice that is right for you at this time (attend religious services, community services, yoga classes or find quiet space alone)
BONUS…by spending just a few minutes each day to put your oxygen mask on, you will also be lowering your stress level, deepening your connection to yourself (and your kids), and setting a great example.
